What makes Re-Action® Mode possible is a second throttle called the High Range Throttle. Now the trolling motor foot pedal offers Two Throttles.
Low Range Throttle (Main Throttle) is set for a slow crawl or trolling speed or a holding pattern against the wind or river current, quite like a hand held trolling motor. The second throttle, High Range Throttle, is preset for the amount of additional thrust needed to bump ahead, go around a stump or log, fight wind gusts or compensate for river current forcing the bow of the boat out of position or off course. When the angler needs more thrust, a simple press of the existing foot pedal Tap Switch means more thrust on demand. When the angler releases the foot pedal tap switch, the trolling motor returns to the Low Range Throttle setting speed. Think about it. Now you can let the trolling motor slowly idle, crawl or troll with both feet on the deck and the only time you need to get on the foot pedal is when you want to bump ahead, correct for a boat wake, go around a log or downed tree, fight the wind or regain control in river currents. Remember, Two Throttles means seven advantages over current trolling motor models. Boat control on calm days means the angler fishes the 90 – 10 rule, 90% focus on fishing and 10% focus on boat control. When fishing on windy days, in boat wakes or river current, the angler’s attention can often be divided 50% for boat control and 50% for fishing. Recovering from wind gusts, boat wakes and river currents break the anglers focus and soon the co-angler has the advantage as his or her focus is still 100% on fishing. Anglers know when they are not in the zone, on their game or focused and this leads to frustration. Are we having fun yet?
Many anglers fish in Momentary mode and will throttle up to a higher setting and tap in bursts to bring the boat back into position. Unfortunately, throttle settings at, or above 30% cause major cavitation and this (shot gun blast) spooks fish for over 100 yards around your boat, each time the angler presses the foot pedal Tap Switch. The second downside to Momentary mode is that each time the angler lets off the foot pedal Tap Switch, the boat is essentially dead in the water and so the bow begins to drift out of position almost immediately. On windy days or when fishing in current, some anglers will switch to Constant mode because the boat will hold position longer if there is some forward thrust. Even a little forward thrust will increase the time it takes to force the bow of the boat out of position. The down side is that each time a wind gust or river current does force the bow out of position, the angler is forced to throttle up and then back down when the boat is back in position and this is quite distracting. With Two Throttles, the Low Range Throttle setting lets you hover (idle), crawl or troll along structure, weed bed edges or shoreline, nice and quiet, like a hand held trolling motor. But now with Two Throttles, when wind gusts, boat wakes or currents demand more thrust to compensate, the angler presses the foot pedal Tap Switch to activate the High Range Throttle setting, like a cable steer trolling motor. When the boat is back in position or on course, the angler releases the foot pedal Tap Switch and the trolling motor returns to the Low Range Throttle setting, hover, slow crawl or trolling speed. Now, fishing on windy days, in river current and boat wakes is easy and the anglers focus, well that’s on fishing.) (Operating your trolling motor in Momentary, On/Off at or above 30% throttle causes cavitation, (prop blast) and spooks fish for over 100 yards around your boat. Cavitation or prop blast is caused by a sudden displacement of water that sucks air down into the water column and blasts it away from the prop. That boil of water you see coming up beside your boat doesn’t look too bad, but it causes a loud sonic boom underwater that sounds like a shotgun blast. Don’t Stop The Prop! Two Throttles means the angler can set the Low Range Throttle so that the propeller is rotating, even at idle, or a slow crawl or trolling speed and when the angler wishes to bump ahead, fight the wind or a boat wake, a press of the foot pedal Tap Switch instantly kicks the trolling motor up to the High Throttle Range setting without the fish spooking cavitation. (Long days fishing with your foot stuck to the foot pedal can result in leg and back fatigue. Hand held trolling motors are popular because the angler’s feet are both on the boat deck and the angler is better balanced in waves and boat wakes. Cable steering and electric steering foot pedals offer relatively hands free operation and the ability to tap for power and let off to cut the trolling motor. Which is best? Well, both! The Re-Action System® has a new mode called Re-Action® Mode with Two Throttles, Low Range Throttle setting and High Range Throttle setting. This means that the angler can set the trolling motor Low Range Throttle to idle, slowly crawl along a weed edge, structure or shoreline like a hand held motor and when the angler wants to bump ahead, fight wind gusts, boat wakes or river currents, he or she simply presses the foot pedal Tap Switch to kick up to the High Range Throttle setting, like a cable or electric steering trolling motor. Think of Re-Action® Mode as a cross between the best features of Momentary mode and Constant On mode. Now you can set up a nice slow crawl and ramp up for more power by pressing your foot pedal Tap Switch. With the Re-Action System®, 'Don't touch that dial' means no more adjusting the throttle up and down.)
(Operating a trolling motor in Momentary mode, On/Off demands heavy starting inrush currents from the trolling batteries each time you hit the foot pedal Tap Switch. Count the number of times you hit the Tap Switch in a day and that’s a lot of starting current being sucked out of your batteries. Don’t Stop The Prop has a second benefit, a very slow idle isn’t enough to move your boat but it means that the starting currents are eliminated. You will use a little power to keep the trolling motor idling, but the elimination of the starting currents far outweighs the amount of power required to idle your trolling motor. Two Throttles means Two times longer on the water.)
(There are places and times where running in Momentary mode is preferred, like when you’re in tight around a dock or boat house, or when you’re fishing in dead calm conditions. There are other times and places where the Re-Action® Mode’s Two Throttles is the best choice, like when fishing in wind gusts, river currents, boat wakes and for shallow water fishing where you don’t want to spook fish. Now you can have your cake and eat it too. Selecting between trolling motor modes with current trolling motor models requires the angler to reach down and flick the Selector Switch. We thought it would make more sense if you could just press the Selector switch with your foot, that’s why it’s called a foot control.)
(Operating in Momentary mode is like driving a pickup truck by hitting the gas and then letting off each time you start and stop. This may come as a shock to some drivers, but it’s really hard on your power train. The vehicle is bound to fail more often and the life of the vehicle will be a lot shorter than it should have been. Your trolling motor takes a beating every time you set the throttle up over 30% and then hit the foot pedal Tap Switch. High starting currents rush in to the trolling motor armature, eating brushes on the way through and the torque is enough to make your mounting brackets and hardware groan and creak. Don’t Stop The Prop. Two Throttles means that you can set the Low Range Throttle to idle, slow crawl or troll as desired and then when you need the big thrust to fight wind gusts, boat wakes or river current, just press the foot pedal Tap Switch and the trolling motor instantly ramps up to the High Range Throttle setting. There’s no delay and so you instantly get all the power you need without abusing your trolling motor. Get the Re-Action System®, your trolling motor will thank you for it!)
(Two Throttles means you can set up your auto steering system at a Low Range Throttle setting for a slow crawl or a desired trolling speed. When wind gusts, river currents or boat wakes try to force the boat out of position, the auto steering system will correctively steer, but it needs more thrust to fight the opposing force. Just press the foot pedal Tap Switch and the trolling motor will ramp up to the High Range Throttle setting to get the boat back in position or on course. When the boat is back in position, the angler releases the foot pedal tap switch and the trolling motor returns to the Low Range Throttle Setting.
